Vietnam Voyage

Posted on 2006.12.19 at 16:41
Current Location: Temasek Tower
Current Mood: bored
We concluded our trip in the most memorable way, getting stuck at the Noi Boi airport for more than 16 hours with no food, insufficient warm clothing, and the longing to be back home where it's warm and fuzzy and clean. Sleeping on cold, hard metal chairs when the temperature was about 15 degrees has its way of lessening the desire to revisit the place anytime soon. But i must say that was prob a once-in-a-lifetime experience (i hope) that I will never forget and with the insurance payouts and airline refund, it prob worked out good after all, esp for gill, who spent a ridiculous amount of money for 8 days in Vietnam, haha.

Saigon
Was dirty, crowded, noisy, dusty, overrun by angmohs (esp those looking for 'romance'. these pple watch too much movies), and in short, not a very pleasant place at all. The mekong tour was nice, and the sampan ride down the river was just lovely. Otherwise, Saigon was really not very memorable at all, cept for the incessant honking of the motorbikes that keep ringing in your ears even when you sleep at night. Oh, the bags there are nice, but unless you are going for the woven/big clutch kind, do not buy anything else (ie those silk kind with wooden handles or soft silk cloth ones) there cos they are SO MUCH CHEAPER in Hoi An.

Dalat
Is the loveliest little town in Vietnam! Getting there itself was an adventure, cos we took our first long bus ride and imagine our horror when we reached there, we saw men dressed in those thick quilted jackets and mufflers and hats and there we were, in our thin jackets (I didn't even have one) and capris/skirt. We were so dreading alightling from the bus and to make it worse, ALL the guesthouses were closed, the place was like a ghosttown and the only place open was cos there was a funeral going on, which made the
place even creepier, and the pple at the funeral must've been thinking are these three girls stupid and crazy or what. Good thing Gill went to ring the doorbell of one of the hotels and the woman answered with rollers in her hair. I even spotted a spoon doubling up as a roller but I think I was too cold at that moment to find humour in it.
The town itself is small and walkable and the only good place to visit was Cho Dalat, their central market. They sell EVERYTHING there! The best find was the roasted sweet potatoes that was so good in the coldcold weather. They sold live poultry in woven bags too and they really looked so squished and poor thing. and the women sold fish, wearing blazers.and juls was saying there aren't occasions for her to wear her blazers back here, haha.
The tour was a super ripoff but we had a really good time with our guides. Mine insisted that he couldn't speak english and then thruout the tour, he was yakking away in english non-stop.rubbish-talkers. I think when people can make jokes in a foreign tongue that are actually funny, they are really quite admirable. We went horse-riding and my crazy horse COLLAPSED on its side once we reached the grazing ground and I just fell on the ground in the most unglam manner. I was so traumatised that Gill had to switch horses with me (hers was really more of a pony that looked like a cow and slightly less crazy).
Oh and when we went to sign the guestbook of the tour agency at the end of the day, we saw this Singaporean group that wrote "Kennasai lunch, ok tour". It was kindda tragically funny how pple could say the worse things and the Vietnamese just don't know any better.

Must-visit in Dalat - Cho Dalat

Hoian
was where most of our money drained into. after a 12 hour ride to hoian, we decided another 24-hour one to Hanoi was simply out of the question. so we paid another 56USD to get a ticket to Hanoi instead (at least they gave us sandwiches) but that was money well spent.
It didn't take long for us to get addicted to tailoring. It was tailor shops galore! they lined almost every street, and you just didn't know which one to walk into cos there were just too many choices. lesson learnt, never go to the tailors at the market. Stick to the ones along the streets. Gill went crrrrazzzzzyy and made like 20 items. at first we were still concerned abt costs and our lack of funds but after the decision to whip out the credit cards was made, there was no turning back. I made simple unexciting stuff like shirts and safe-dresses but you should see juls' 'the freak'! It was a casual flowy dress turned so super wrong that she had it ripped apart to at least salvage the nice satin and make a top out of it.
It was here that we witnessed the making of very simple, $3/pair of slippers that totally humbled us. at first we were indignant that the lady overcharged us by a dollar per slipper (the otehr shops were selling them at abt $2 each) but after watching the father and son team work so hard at making 8 pairs of slippers for us, we realised how petty we were to even think about the loss of a dollar when these pple are prob shortening their lives by half with all the glue that they have to sniff everyday, just so that we can have a pair of slippers that we will cast aside after like, 10 wears.

Must-visit in Hoian - Bale Well. 45000 dong ($4.5) for unlimited grilled pork satay, grilled pork, rice pancakes, spring rolls, vege, kimchi. yum!

Hanoi
Was surprisingly modern! after visiting the other towns and concluding that vietnamese fashion is an oxymoron, Hanoi was quite a surprise cos the pple were trendy (relatively) and the streets were cleaner generally had a less cluttered feel than Saigon. In fact, walking down the lake even kindda reminded us of walking down the streets of Europe.:) Too bad we had too little time there to explore, but there is always next time!

Okays. back to reality now. Pics later!

Not half as spectacular as the pics that you have, wq, but the experience was still exhilirating.

it's strange how something so beautiful as this explosion of colours can move me to tears. i love the way it transports me to another dimension for that ten mins or so and i become oblivious to everything else. before the display started juls and i were eeking over the muddy grass but once the sky was lighted, we stopped our whining. i guess so few things are able to capture my full attention these days and that makes this even more memorable.

tomorrow again again:)

and we completed our trial run! surprisingly, it was a pretty easy run. i don't know whether it was cos i was expecting much worse or maybe i'm just used to working out so early in the mornings anyways that my body was just reacting as per normal, but thruout,i didn't feel the strain at all. ok, so i did during the first two km but when we reached four, i remembered thinking, wow we're at four already? and that made me feel strong and more energetic than before. then we hit hte sand, which really wasn't as soft as i thought it would be and the trail was jsut a winding road with twigs and leaves amidst a thick growth of trees. other than a couple of difficult times on the sand, the rest was all fine. all that time spent at the gym is paying off!
and juls, we are troopers indeed! remember, we are gonna run past the finish line hand in hand under one hour ok!

Of typhoons, rainbows and bakeries galore

Back from a much too short holiday, especially with the three days of wet weather and crazy winds. Not a fantastic place, not even very memorable, but we realised that this was our first ever holiday together, amazingly, and spending so much time together in a foreign land does bring pple together, even if it's just for that little while.

Likes

1. The rainbow that greeted us at CKS Airport, though the sky was overcast and threatening to unleash its fury on us.

2. Countless bakeries that sold the most DELIGHTFUl, YUMMIEST bread in all sorts of varieties that even small neighbourhood ones can put Breadtalk to shame.

3. The hospitality of the Taiwanese.

4. The cheerful rythmnic "huan ying guang ling" that greeted us at every store.

5. Skincare and makeup stores galore.

6. ZHEN ZHU NAI CHA everywhere.

7. The effort that goes into their "ice kacang" creations such that even "chi bing" is such an experience everytime.

8. Dan Shui fishballs.

9. Being able to play the silliest games in the arcade with the sister, and even the mother.

10. Being able to say, "I survived a typhoon."

Dislikes

1. Muddy puddly streets.

2. Grey drab buildings that scream "Malaysia!".

3. Heavy rains.

4. Getting lost after walking more than 1k, in wet and windy streets.

5. Pigs/Chicken/Duck/whatever innards.

6. Night markets.

7. Paying 400NT for a skirt at Wu Fen Pu and finding the exact same one at Shilin at TWO for 400NT.

8. Wasting three days because of the untimely typhoon.

Guess I won't be going anywhere else anytime soon. Sigh.

You know the salesgirl is only interested in making a sale when she tells you a colour looks good on you cos you're soooo fair and you look in the mirror and see that she is at least 10 shades lighter than you are. or at least the foundation on her face is.

ok, it sounds like a bad excuse for not keeping up with emails and lj but i just dont online so often anymore. not that i'm not interested in what's going on with my friends, but at work, i cant access my gmail acct, and i don't have time to surf anymore. plus i hate to say this, the truth is i have become a gym rat and i spend most of my days after work at the gym and when i get home, i have to spend time with the mother so i dont go online at home on weekdays either. but i guess the main reason is that so much time is spent staring at the monitor at work everyday that i really don't wanna do the same back home.

and as disgusting as it sounds, i have become addicted to the gym so much so that if i don't go on any day, i get lethargic and sick. spinning has become my new hobby cos it's gives me such a high after every session. yes wq, i know you hate it but then i reallyreally enjoy seeing that pool of sweat on the floor after every session and feeling like superwoman even though my legs are jellified.

actually im updating now cos my blardy notes has been hanging for the past 10 mins just cos i go and ge kiang and try to send a big file and then when i clicked send, the screen just went white while i stared in horror. i refuse to restart my com cos it's 5.42pm already and it will just be a waste of time since i plan to leave at 6 SHARP today. i suspect it wont recover till 6 which is good since then i will have a legitimate reason to shut down my com and in the meantime, i can surf and read all of your updates without feeling guilty that my colleagues are all busy on the phone or discussing "important things" like churning out silly factsheets that make us sound important for the press.

HA. now it is 5.48 and my notes is still blank. 12 more mins to go. i wonder if it can hang on (ha-ha) like that. oh, apparently the toilets upstairs were leaking today and it affected like, all the way down to our floor and our CE's room had this yellowish liquid going ard. that is relaly the grossest thing to know you have pee entrenched in your carpet. i wonder how they're gonna get rid of that.

5.52. ok, i shall visit the toilet now and pack up. i bet notes'll be in the exact same state when i get back. woohoo.

Had a pretty hectic week at work, not in the work till 9 sense (no one ever seems to have to do that on my floor, not even 8), but at least the work hours are all filled with real stuff to do, to deal with, and i actually do feel like im learning finally. My bitchy boss has left, so things are done at a much more relaxed pace and i have grown to like the sbb quite abit, though i cant say i agree with everything she wants to do. but all in all, things are looking rosy:) but somehow i still lack initiative in certain areas and im trying to right that otherwise i think i will nvr get a chance at any form of advancement cos it seems that the pple moving ahead are from the other more "public"departments. okay that doesnt sound right cos how can corp comms be not "public" enough right. it's more like we don't generate any real tangible value so pple dont really give two hoots abt us. and that sucks cos if it really works that way, no matter how much we do, we will nvr be appreciated. i see my boss trying to make changes to improve that situation and it's great. she gives us free rein to do what we want instead of giving us very specific instructions that we absolutely have to follow and even suggests things for us to do to expose us to more things, like taking turns to give short welcome speeches to visitors (which my previous boss used to do herself) and having discussions with us to allow us to give our ideas, things that i truly appreciate and am glad for. and she's sending me for courses! yayyayyay.

ok anyways, here's the more impt thing. van, good luck for your moots! i am so sure you'll be bringing home the best speaker award. remember all of us here are behind you all the way so have a blast in Vienna kay!

because i'm the only one left in my department now

wow, i havent checked lj for a week and there're so many entries! since i only have half an hr left before i scoot off to meet the mother, i shall go read them all in detail when i get back. Past week's been crazy busy. i got my first media query to handle! my boss put off handing me media queries for a month and even though my colleague would be really busy, she would always pass media queries to her still instead of me. my colleague figured its cos she is too lazy to teach me and since she's leaving soon, she couldnt care less abt whether i am learning. then on tuesday she passed this query to the new boss and i and her email said "XXX, you take over. Chiew Leng will help you". and it was really like, WTF?? you are asking SBB to do the query when its just her 2nd week here and you are asking me to help her when i don't even really know how to go abt handling queries?? and she didnt offer much help also, cept to rush us to get info frm the various departments and give us pressure only. Thank god next week's her last. but i felt that i learnt so much more this week than the past 4 combined, and that is very satisfying indeed.

more satisfying things, i have taken up muay thai:) yes, i am a fighter! but it's really mother painful to kick the sandbags and pads and i have a big bruise on my leg to show for it. there're only 3 girls in the club though. it's those hardcore muay thai club kind and i actually kindda secretly hope one day i can go in the ring and fight (cos the girl who can looks pretty cool).it's such a great way to release pent-up fustrations. anyone wants to try?

juls, i'm really looking forward to the trail tmr, so pray that your heats will end early pls!
see you girlies tmr:))
